SMS Competencies for Automated Initial/Recurrent Training

How This Module is Used

The SMS Competencies and Training module is used in two different ways depending on an employees relationship with your company:

  • For new employees, the SMS Competencies and Training module automates initial SMS induction training;
  • For existing employees, this module provides autoamted recurring training based on the requirements and role-quizzes you configure during setup.

When a new employee is first being inducted to your SMS program, you provide steps that they need to take in order to begin using the Automation Tool. These steps usually include things like watching training videos, reviewing Safety Policy items, and so on. Once inducted, you have documentation to prove that they received initial SMS training.

For existing employees, you create custom quizzes for any given role. After an employee's recurrent training time period expires (usually 1-2 years, depending on your configuration) , that employee has to complete the quiz with the requisite score for each of their user roles that has a corresponding quiz. For example, if you have created a quiz for safety managers and a quiz for department heads, an employee with a safety manager and department head role will have to take two quizzes (one for each role) in order to pass recurrent training.

Benefits of SMS Competencies and Training Module

The Part 5 Automation Tool’s SMS Competencies and Training module is where you can configure initial and recurring training requirements for employees. This training requirement is automated, which means once you configure it, all of the training is taken care of automatically.

It allows you to ensure that employees fulfill initial training requirements before they use Automation Tool, and then on an annual or biennial basis. These training are configured by you to fit your specific needs, and include requirements for reviewing:

  • Policies;
  • Responsibilities;
  • Other documentation;
  • The ability to create role-based SMS quizzes to ensure that employees understand their role and purpose in the SMS program; and
  • Prove to auditors that all employees have received SMS training.

This module helps satisfy FAA Part 5.91 Competencies and training requirements.
